Background of the TB Control Programme

By Dr Nita Harding

  • Bovine tuberculosis (TB) arrived in New Zealand at the same time cattle did – in the mid 19th century and we have been trying to control and eradicate TB since then. NZ has gone from having 666 infected cattle and deer herds in the early 2000’s to now having 25 infected herds. Back in the mid 2000’s Waikato was the TB centre of focus for the North Island but now in the early 2020’s this focus is now on Hawkes Bay.
