This simple computer program has been developed to enable dairy heifer feed and energy requirements tailored to their farm conditions.

Dairy heifers require a certain amount of feed, and most importantly energy, to maintain live weight.
Any feed provided above these maintenance requirements is used to support growth needed to reach live weight targets.
Maintenance requirements increase if heifers need to work for their feed.
A heifer grazing high quality spring feed on flat land with high pre-grazing masses has to work significantly less than a heifer grazing poor quality summer feed on rolling to steep land with low pre-grazing masses.
It is, therefore, important that differences in energy expenditure due to grazing conditions are accounted for when calculating feed requirements to meet heifer growth targets.

These issues have been addressed in a simple program developed by

New Zealand Grazing Company, in conjunction with Jeremy Bryant of AgResearch,

which can be used to calculate feed requirements to meet growth targets in any grazing conditions over a period of time.
To describe heifers, program users need to enter a group average birth date, current date, current live weight, breed and, if desired, a growth rate target.
Alternatively, the growth rate needed to reach breed-specific live weight targets at the end of the period is calculated.
The typical terrain of the farm or grazing block, estimates of pasture quality with some typical values provided, and pre-grazing mass of pasture offered are then entered.
The program then accurately calculates the amount of energy and feed (kg of dry matter) required per heifer per day to meet growth targets accounting for the grazing conditions of the farm.
The program removes any guess work, and should make it easier to formulate feeding plans that ensure heifers meet live weight targets.
