A familiar face in Taranaki farming and sporting circles, John has an extensive background in farming, having progressed through the ranks of sharemilkers to farm ownership.

Prior to his appointment with the NZGC, he was operations and events manager at Yarrows Stadium. He was also manager of the Yarrows Taranaki NPC team for a nine year term.

An experienced AB technician, John has also won some acclaim as a stockman. Back in 1977, John and Sue Mitchell won the inaugural Taranaki Sharemilker Of The Year award. However, he recalls, there was nothing of the glitz and glamour, not to mention tens of thousands of dollars in prizes which comes with the title today. 

“We were shouted a meal of fisn’n chips – straight from the paper they were wrapped in – at a hotel in Stratford,” he says.
